Democrat. One of the most powerful California politicians, for many years he was Speaker of the California State Assembly, the same position later held by Willie Brown with similar dexterity. Unruh ran for Governor in 1970 but lost to Ronald Reagan, and subsequently lost the 1973 election for Mayor of Los Angeles to Tom Bradley. In 1974 he became State Treasurer, serving three terms. Strangely, his name is largely forgotten today. Best quote, "If you can't drink a lobbyist's whiskey, take his money, sleep with his women and still vote against him in the morning, you don't belong in politics."
