As an openly gay candidate, he was elected to San Franscisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, a position he held until he and popular Mayor George Moscone were shot to death by former policeman and city supervisor Dan White. After White was convicted of a much lesser charge than murder ("twinkie defense"), an enraged populace of San Francisco erupted in the "White Night Riot". The despondent White later committed suicide.
