In June 1994, Judge Roll ruled one aspect of the Brady Act to be unconstitutional. The ruling struck down the provision that would require police departments to perform a "reasonable background search" for all would-be gun buyers. He was shot and killed at a public event during the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords by a crazed gunman.
