Executive summary: 12th Man on the Moon

Originally a geologist, Jack Schmitt was selected and trained by NASA for the Apollo 17 mission, the last manned lunar mission. The 12th man to walk on the moon, Schmitt (and crewmate Gene Cernan) collected a record 110 kilograms (225 pounds) of rock and soil samples for analysis upon return to Earth. Schmitt also surprised the world by discovering an area of orange soil on the lunar surface. During his single flight into space Dr. Schmitt logged 301 hours and 51 minutes of space flight time, 22 hours and 4 minutes of which free EVAs on the lunar surface.

In August of 1975, Dr. Schmitt resigned his post with NASA to run as the Republican candidate for Senator in his home state of New Mexico. He served one six-year term and did not win re-election. Schmitt went on to work as a corporate director and as a consultant, writer, and speaker on matters related to space, science, technology, and public policy. In 1994, he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin as well as the Chairman and President of the Annapolis Center for Environmental Quality.
