He has played with most of the world's finest symphonies, released more than two dozen CDs, performed violin solos in several movies, and won a Grammy in 2000. In a lighthearted stunt for the Washington Post in 2007, he performed as an anonymous busker at a public transit station in the nation's capital, collecting about $32 in his open violin case in less than an hour's playing.
Bell's father was a noted psychotherapist long associated with the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, and co-author of a landmark study debunking the notion that homosexuality is a mental disorder.
