At midnight on September 16, 1810 he rang his parish bell in the city of Dolores, Guanajuatao and called for the death of all Spaniards -- an act ceremoniously repeated annually by the current Mexican government. He subsequently raised armies for a free Mexico and swept through the central state of Guanajuato, causing the death of many Spaniards and his own excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church.
After an overwhelming defeat by royalist forces a tenth the size of his army, Hidalgo was relieved of command by Ignacio Allende. Their armies schismed and separated. While heading north to Tejas, Hidalgo and his men were captured by traitors.
Hidalgo was defrocked and executed by firing squad. The reigns of the rebellion fell to military leader Jose Maria Morelos, and Mexico would not see its independence for another decade.
