Executive summary: Head spins in Exorcist

Linda Blair began working as a model when she was five years old. Her cherubic face was seen in innumerable TV commercials and magazine ads in the mid-1960s, in campaigns for everything from Sears and Penny's to Downey fabric softener, Welch's grape jam, and Ivory soap. At 9, she was cast as a Senator's daughter on a short-lived daytime soap opera, Hidden Faces. In her first film, The Way We Live Now in 1970, she had a small role as the daughter in a broken marriage.

In her most famous role, 13-year-old Blair played an adolescent possessed by demons in The Exorcist with Ellen Burstyn and Max von Sydow. After that, she made girl-in-peril films and, later, woman-in-peril exploitation films. In Airport 1975 she was the sick girl who required a kidney transplant, in Born Innocent she was raped with a broom handle in the shower at juvenile hall; in Sweet Hostage, she was kidnapped by escaped lunatic Martin Sheen; in Sarah T.: Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic she played a young lush with a crush on Mark Hamill; in Chained Heat she served time in a prison for beautiful topless women, and in Savage Streets she violently avenged the rape of her younger sister. In slightly more mainstream films, Blair did all her own skating in Roller Boogie with Mark Goddard and spoofed The Exorcist in Repossessed with Leslie Nielsen.

She dated singer Rick James in the 1980s, and his hit "Cold-Blooded" is said to be inspired by Blair. She made her Broadway debut in 1997, briefly replacing Lucy Lawless as Betty Rizzo in Grease. She is active with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Of course the levitating bed, projectile vomit, spontaneous flesh wounds, voice of Satan, and other scary moments from The Exorcist were done with special effects. Still, even today Blair says, "You wouldn't believe how often people ask me to make my head spin around."
