After suffering a long illness, he left the ministry in the early 1870s, and in 1873 he began selling second-hand textbooks out of his home in Wheaton, Illinois. He eventually relocated to Chicago, where he reorganized the business as C.M. Barnes Company in 1894. Barnes Co became a leader in the sale and distribution of school textbooks, and Barnes was a wealthy man when he retired in 1902 from what was then called the Barnes-Wilcox Company. Under the management of his son, William Barnes, Barnes-Wilcox expanded its selection to include general interest titles, and in 1917 merged with Manhattan bookseller Noble & Noble to form Barnes & Noble.
