Executive summary: Xena, Warrior Princess As a girl, Lucy Lawless appeared in several musicals staged by her high school, and studied opera at Auckland University, but dropped out. She worked as a gold miner, truck driver, and cartographer, and was already married and a mother before show biz beckoned -- when she won the Mrs. New Zealand beauty pageant in 1989.
The marriage did not last, but wearing that crown she made a few TV commercials, and when her reign was finished she joined Funny Business, a comedy troupe with a weekly sketch TV show. She subsequently hosted a travel show and co-starred in the down-under sitcom For the Love of Mike. Her first prominent film role was 1992's Rainbow Warrior, the tale of the sinking of the Greenpeace ship, alongside Jon Voight and Sam Neill.
Her big break came in 1994, with a smallish role as Lysia in the pilot for Kevin Sorbo's semi-silly TV series, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Dyeing her hair a darker color, she later played Xena on Hercules, and the viewer response convinced the studio that Xena should have her own show. Hercules ran four years with middling ratings, while Xena wore the breastplate of righteousness for six seasons, and spent much of that time as the most popular syndicated show in America. Midway through Xena's run, she married the show's executive producer, Rob Tapert.
