As an outfielder, he played in three All-Star Games and helped the New York Mets defeat the Boston Red Sox in the 1986 World Series, and batted .285 over his career, although he later claimed to have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars investigating the private lives of umpires in order to blackmail his way to a smaller strike zone and a better batting average. His financial career ended with Dykstra pleading guilty to bankruptcy fraud, asset concealment, and money laundering.
