Ian McDonald received his musical training in the British military, and went on to become a founding member of King Crimson (two not essentially dissimilar situations). He left Crimson after only one record, but rejoined briefly for the album Red in 1975. In 1977 he co-founded the band Foreigner, but was dismissed from service after the band's third record.
