Misled into believing that the Mexican people actually wanted a European transplant to rule over them as their king, Maximilian arrived from Italy in 1864 and promptly established himself as the ruler of Mexico. This lasted for three years, until the Mexicans overthrew the monarchy and executed Maximilian by means of firing squad.
