Executive summary: 2009 TSA Director nominee

Former special agent for the FBI and deputy director of homeland security for California, nominated by President Barack Obama in September 2009 to head the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). His nomination was blocked by Republican Senator Jim DeMint, alleging fears that Southers might somehow unionize TSA baggage inspectors. Southers has never stated a position on that issue, but while his nomination was blocked, on Christmas Day 2009, Nigerian al-Qaeda terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to bomb a Northwestern Airlines flight to Detroit with 278 passengers aboard.
