Former head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party. In 1945, with support of the Soviet Union, from land carved out of Persia he helped found the Republic of Mahabad and became its Minister of Defense. No countries recognized the new nation, and it collapsed in 1947 under Iranian assault. Various exiles followed, as well as military conflict with Iraq. His son, Massoud Barzani, is President of Iraqi Kurdistan.
