Notorious Austrian rapist Josef Fritzl made his first experiment in imprisonment in 1956. A new homeowner, he bricked up the windows in an upstairs room and locked his mother inside, telling neighbors she had died. Twenty years later, in the same house, he began abusing his 11-year-old daughter Elisabeth, while getting the permits in order for a basement expansion. The girl ran away to Vienna at age 17 but was returned by police. On 28 April 1984, Fritzl lured her into the basement and handcuffed her to a pillar, keeping her there as a sex slave for the next two decades. Various forged and dictated notes assured his credulous wife that the girl had simply run away again, joining a religious sect in Kematen.

Fritzl fathered seven incestuous children by his daughter. Three of them he arranged to be "discovered" outside by his wife, then joining the family upstairs. One son from a set of twins died in infancy; his body was disposed of in the incinerator. The rest were raised in the cellar and never saw daylight. The situation would have persisted indefinitely, but in 2008 his eldest incest-daughter -- now 19 -- suffered kidney failure, and Fritzl was persuaded by Elisabeth -- now 42 -- to carry the girl outside and take her to a hospital. Within a week the plot had unraveled completely. Fritzl was arrested, and, after a trial that lasted four days, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The cellar children were released and gradually rehabilitated, but suffer lasting trauma and remain sensitive to sunlight.
