Military service: Yugoslavian Army, and later Croatian Army (paratrooper) Goran Visnjic began acting while still a teenager, and made his film debut at the age of 16, in Braca po Materi, a melodrama of half-brothers torn asunder by the Serb-Croat conflict. He joined the Yugoslavian army fresh from high school. After his service he vowed never to pick up a gun again, a promise he broke when Slobodan Milosevic attacked Croatia. He enlisted with the Croatian Army, but did not see wartime duty.
After studying at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb, Visnjic's break came at the age of 21, when he was cast as a minor character in a Croatian production of Hamlet. The actor in the title role fell ill, and Visnjic, understudying the lead, came through with a well-received performance. Subsequently he played the role in Croatian touring productions for several years. Visnjic parlayed his stage success into several Croatian TV roles.
His first appearance in a mostly-English-language film was 1997's Welcome to Sarajevo. He joined the long-running ER in 1999 in its sixth season, as the brooding Croatian doctor Luka Kovac. Early in his stint on ER, Visnjic reportedly snapped at co-star Noah Wyle when Wyle complained about the buffet for cast and crew. "American celebrities are a bunch of spoiled brats! How dare you complain about this food when there are people all over the world who would give their lives for a fraction of what you have!"
ER is now one of the most popular imported television shows in Croatia, airing in English with subtitles. When the series ends, Visnjic intends to return to Croatia, where most of his family still lives, and direct theater. Father: Zeljko Visnjic (bus driver)
