In his mid-forties, this long-haired Jesuit priest ran unsuccessfully (as a Republican against the Vietnam War) for the U.S. Senate from Rhode Island in 1970, but eventually wound up marrying his campaign manager, Ann Dore. After the failed campaign, McLaughlin became a speechwriter for Presidents Nixon and Ford.
