The world's foremost authority on orangutans, physical anthropolgist Biruté Galdikas was first recruited to the work by Louis Leakey. She has since been a tireless force for the study and preservation of this endangered great ape species. Sometimes called one of "Leakey's Angels", Galdikas is deemed, as a primatologist, to be of equal significance to Jane Goodall and the late Dian Fossey.
