Doing what some felt was impossible, at age 25 Bannister ran a mile in 3:59:4 on 6 May 1954 at Oxford University, establishing a world record and earning himself Sports Illustrated's first "Sportsman of the Year" award. One month later, Australian John Landy broke Bannister's record. After graduation from Oxford, Bannister became a neurologist, edited several neurological journals, and served on various British sports councils.
