In the late 1950s, James Bateman served several years as an intelligence officer in the US Air Force, then as "Henry Gibson" (a likely pun on Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen) he landed a minor role in Jerry Lewis's 1963 slapstick comedy, The Nutty Professor. He obtained various minor film roles until 1968, when he became part of the original cast of Laugh-In. His primary shtick was to hold up a bouquet of flowers and recite deadpan a piece of ridiculous poetry. All of his poetry was self-written; it was enormously funny. Laugh-In had an impact far beyond its immediate broadcast, paving the way for such shows as Saturday Night Live and In Living Color. After leaving television comedy, Gibson had notable parts in several Robert Altman films, including the role of country music singer Haven Hamilton in Nashville (1975), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. He had a fantastic part playing a Nazi in The Blues Brothers (1980) and a villainous neighbor in The 'burbs (1989). He voiced the pig in the 1973 animated children's classic, Charlotte's Web. Later years saw Gibson make occasional but memorable appearances as Judge Clark Brown in Boston Legal. He died in 2009 following a battle with cancer.
