He became a suspect after a policeman heard a splash in the Chattahoochee River and spotted William's car driving off. The body of Nathaniel Cater was retrieved from the river soon afterward. Williams was convicted largely on circumstancial evidence for the murders of two adult men, but the child murders stopped after he was arrested in 1981.
