For Abe Fortas, Ely wrote the first draft of the brief submitted for Gideon v. Wainwright, the case made famous in the film Gideon's Trumpet (1980). Clerked for Earl Warren, after which he joined the faculties of Yale and then Harvard Law School. His work, Democracy and Distrust, is the most-cited book on law of the 20th Century.
