Executive summary: The Rolling Stones

Growing up in South London, Keith Richards idolized rock-and-rollers like Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, and bluesman Muddy Waters. With boyhood friend Mick Jagger, Richards started the Rolling Stones in 1962. The band's name came not from the proverb, but from a famous Waters song, "Rollin' Stone". As a young man, Richards sometimes called himself Keith Richard (singular instead of plural), during times when he and his father were feuding or not talking.

Richards was arrested on drug charges at least ten times in the 60s and 70s. "I never had a problem with drugs", he says, "only with cops." A 1977 heroin bust in Toronto finally motivated him to get clean. Richards says he wrote "Beast of Burden" as an after-rehab apology to Jagger, who had shouldered much of the Stones' responsibilities while Richards was perpetually stoned. He said he gave up cocaine after fracturing his skull in a 2006 tumble from a palm tree while he was high, but still loves smoking marijuana.

After his father died in 2002, Richards claimed in a 2007 interview with NME, he once ground up some of his father's cremains with cocaine and snorted them. When it became clear that he would lose endorsements and money because of this, he withdrew his admission, calling it a joke. In a 2010 interview, he clarified what happened: "I opened Dad's ashes, and some blew over the table. I asked, should I desecrate them with a broom? So I wet me finger and I shoved a bit of me dad up me f*cking 'ooter [nose]." In a 2015 interview, Richards invited his daughters, Theodora and Alexandra, to inhale his own cremated remains after his death, and added, "I'll give them a straw."

The Stones jammed with Waters, their bluesman inspiration, before he died in 1983. Says Richards: "To have Muddy Waters say to you, Hey, show me that lick you did... Everybody's a perennial teenager when it comes to shit like that."
