Originally an employee of Scribner and Sons starting in 1877 at age 15, teamed up with Samuel S. McClure to found Doubleday and McClure. Though they had some falling out, the company emerged by 1927 as the largest English language publisher in the world. In 1900, notoriously published Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser, and then immediately had it withdrawn due to amorality.
