After admitting to espionage and turning himself in, Greenglass struck a plea bargain with the FBI such that he would implicate his brother-in-law Julius Rosenberg in the plot and serve ten years in prison for espionage in exchange for his wife to go unaccused. In the course of the legal proceedings, he lied under oath about his sister Ethel Rosenberg's involvement in the plot. As a result, both she and her husband were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage, the only such conviction to arise in the whole of the cold war. After being released from prison in 1961, Greenglass lived in New York under an assumed name, until finally in 1996 he admitted his perjury to a New York Times reporter.
