He was an active player in geopolitical intrigue, as Ephraim Kahana wryly notes: "Kimche habitually appeared in an African country a day or two before a major coup and left a week later after the new regime was firmly in control." But Kimche was most notorious for his role in the Iran-Contra affair, where he suggested that the US supply arms to Israel, who laundered them for Iran in return for freeing American hostages held in Lebanon. The deal remained secret until 1986, when its publication resulted in disastrous consequences on the American political scene. After retirement from the Mossad, he served in the equivalent position of deputy director of the Israeli Foreign Ministry for six years.
