Her late husband, Stan Rice, was a well-respected poet. Her sister, Alice Borchardt, was a writer best known for a series of books about werewolves, The Silver Wolf, Night of the Wolf and The Wolf King. Her son is also a best-selling novelist, with works including A Density of Souls, Blind Fall, The Moonlit Earth, and The Snow Garden. Rice lives in a New Orleans mansion previously occupied by Judge John Minor Wisdom.

[1] Born at Mercy Hospital in New Orleans.

[2] Formerly a Roman Catholic. Rice wrote on her Facebook page, 28 July 2010: "I quit being a Christian. I'm out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen." Apparently she is withdrawing only from the community of believers and not from her belief in the Christ deity, as a subsequent clarification read: "Faith in Christ is central to my life."
