James Caviezel was a part-time actor in Seattle stage productions when he obtained a role in My Own Private Idaho, filmed locally. As a full-fledged member of the Screen Actors Guild, he then moved to Los Angeles and waited tables between auditions. Caviezel played bit parts in several forgettable films until Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line, where he played a pacifist private at Guadalcanal, providing the moral compass for a messy masterpiece. In 1999, he stole Ang Lee's civil war drama Ride with the Devil, and in 2002 he played the title character in an unnecessary but adequate remake of The Count of Monte Cristo.

His real starmaking role, though, came as Jesus in Mel Gibson's homoerotic B&D classic The Passion of the Christ. If one is to believe the film's publicity, Caviezel was struck by lightning while playing Our Lord and Savior, but emerged unharmed. "I'm about a hundred feet away from them when I glance over and see smoke coming out of Caviezel's ears," said Steve McEveety, the film's producer. Pop goes Caviezel, as Paula Poundstone cracked.

Devoutly Catholic, Caviezel says the rosary every day. On the silver screen, he has shared steamy scenes with, among others, Ashley Judd in High Crimes and Jennifer Lopez in Angel Eyes, but Caviezel insists that they be "love scenes, not sex scenes". When Lopez started to strip for their scene, he stopped her, and asked her to leave her bra and panties on, explaining that it would be wrong to "rub up" against a naked woman he wasn't married to. "The only bare breasts I want next to me in my life belong to my wife", he said.

Caviezel's father, James Caviezel Sr., played basketball at UCLA during the glory years under coach John Wooden. All the Caviezel children, boys and girls, played basketball in high school and college.
