Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq during the last years of Saddam Hussein's dictatorship, Tariq Aziz surrendered to US forces on 25 April 2003, just days after the American invasion of Iraq. He reportedly wanted to testify against Hussein in exchange for an early release, but American officials refused to make such a deal. Five years later Aziz faced trial for signing death warrants and forced dislocations while Deputy PM, and pled not guilty, maintaining that such decisions were never under his authority. He was acquitted on some charges but convicted of having ordered dozens of executions, and sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2009. By order of the Supreme Iraqi Criminal Tribunal in 2010, the earlier sentence was superseded by a sentence of death, but he died of a heart attack in prison in 2015.
