Emigrated to the Netherlands in 1992 and applied for political asylum to avoid an arranged marriage. Wrote the screenplay for Theo Van Gogh's short film Submission (2004), broadcast of which prompted the filmmaker's assassination and caused Ali to go into hiding. She returned to Parliament in 2005, but resigned a year later when the Dutch government threatened to revoke her citizenship, having discovered that Ali had falsified her name and age while seeking asylum. She has since relocated to the United States.
