Alan Shalleck gave new life to the Curious George character, a staple of juvenile literature created in 1939 by Hans and Margret Rey. Shalleck worked with Margret starting in 1977, co-editing 28 additional books in the series, and creating over 100 episodes based on the books for broadcast television. Hans had died in 1977, and Margret in 1996. In 2006, Imagine Entertainment and Universal Animation Studios released a feature film, titled Curious George.

Tragically, Shalleck was murdered by Rex S. Ditto and Vincent J. Puglisi during a robbery on Superbowl Sunday, mere days after the release of the film. His body, found on his driveway under a pile of trash bags, had 83 blunt force injuries and had been stabbed dozens of times. Police arrested Ditto after tracing phone records, and after a guilty plea he received a life sentence.
