Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Geologist, Physicist Nationality: England Executive summary: Plate tectonics Military service: British Navy Geologist and geophysicist Drummond Matthews provided early scientific support for the theory of plate tectonics, in a 1963 paper co-authored by his graduate student, Frederick Vine. Their finding, that the crust near mid-ocean ridges was comprised of streaks or alternating magnetic polarity, suggested that the magnetic polarization of newly-formed rocks could be used to substantiate the theory of seafloor spreading. This led to widespread acceptance of the theory that the earth's crust consists of large rigid plates. Wife: (married twice, one son, one daughter)
