Executive summary: Advocate for legalizing marijuana Marijuana expert Ed Rosenthal writes the "Ask Ed" column for Cannabis Culture magazine, and has authored more than twenty books about marijuana cultivation. During the Ronald Reagan presidency he served as an adviser for the federal government's pot farm, part of the Marijuana Research Project at the University of Mississippi, but during the George W. Bush administration he was arrested by DEA investigators for growing some 100 marijuana plants for a California medicinal marijuana club. Medical marijuana is legal under California state law, and Rosenthal had deputized by the city of Oakland to grow the medicinal herb, but cannabis remains illegal under federal law. Rosenthal was convicted and sentenced to one day in jail. The conviction was overturned on appeal, and reinstated in a second trial, albeit with no additional sentence.
