Dutch classicist painter. Attended Antwerp Academy. Came to England in 1869 in his mid-thirties. He began by painting scenes from Egypt, Greece and Rome. Was sometimes criticized for painting without spirituality or for painting "Victorians in togas." Despite this he was extremely successful and his prints were found in many well-to-do British homes. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1899. His better-known works include Spring, The Coliseum, The Baths of Caracalla, and The Finding of Moses. He was a member of the Royal Watercolour Society.
