Ferruccio Lamborghini worked as a mechanic after school, then supervised vehicle maintenance at a military base during World War II. After the war he launched Lamborghini Trattori (Lamborghini Tractors), a business that purchased used military vehicles -- even tanks -- and reconstructed them as reliable tractors during Italy's reconstruction, almost literally turning swords into plowshares. In 1950 Lamborghini Trattori began producing its own tractors, designed by Lamborghini and his engineers, and by the mid 1950s Lamborghini was a multi-millionaire. He established his car-making concern in 1962, out of spite, according to company lore, after he bought a Ferrari and became dissatisfied with that company's workmanship and service. Though the business has never been terribly profitable and the company only makes a few hundred cars each year, Lamborghinis remain among the world's most prestigious high-performance sports cars. Lamborghini sold the tractor business in 1972, and Lamborghini Trattori is now a subsidiary of Same Deutz-Fahr Group, an Italian builder of tractors, combines, and farm equipment. He sold Automobili Lamborghini in 1974, and the sports car maker is now a subsidiary of Audi, which is itself a subsidiary of Volkswagen.
