Executive summary: The Station Agent

As a boy Peter Dinklage put on puppet shows, and after starring in a fourth-grade production of Pinocchio, he knew he wanted to be an actor. In high school, he was teased and taunted by other kids, called "Dinky Dinklage", and when he signed up for acting lessons he heard cruel jokes about Hervé Villechaize. He says he punched a lot of walls, before slowly developing a sense of humor about his dwarfism, caused by a genetic disorder called achondroplasia. "Everybody has some sort of pain in their life," he now says. "I don't want to set my pain above anybody else's." Close friends call him Dink.

He studied drama in Vermont, England, and Wales, and has worked extensively on stage, playing Tom Thumb in The Killing Act and Shakespeare's savage butcher king Richard III off-Broadway, among many other roles.

In his film debut, Dinklage played Tito the blue-suited dream dancer in 1995's Living in Oblivion with Steve Buscemi. He played Binky, assistant to Bananas the clown in 13 Moons with Buscemi and Jennifer Beals, the bitter storybook author who fought with Will Ferrell in Elf, the drug-addicted motorcycling Frenchman in Tiptoes with Gary Oldman, the wedding planner in The Baxter with Michelle Williams, the puppeteer who saved the dog's life in the 2005 remake of Lassie with Peter O'Toole, and Vin Diesel's attorney in Find Me Guilty.

In his first starring role -- the first starring role for any dwarf in a feature film -- he played the loner who lived in the railroad depot in The Station Agent with Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale. On TV, he played the linguist and mathematician on the short-lived sci-fi series Threshold with Carla Gugino and Brent Spiner, slept with Joely Richardson and sought to have his legs lengthened on Nip/Tuck, and competed on Celebrity Poker Showdown.

His brother, Jonathan Dinklage, is a professional violinist who has performed in the orchestra for Broadway plays, pop albums, and such films as Everything is Illuminated with Elijah Wood. Their grandmother appeared in silent films, but all her movies are believed to be lost.
