Crusader for the First Amendment. First prominent victory was defending the director of the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, charged with obscenity after exhibiting photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe. Successfully challenged the constitutionality of the Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996 in Free Speech Coalition v. Ashcroft (2002), concerning an over-broad definition of child pornography where "such visual depiction is, or appears to be, of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct". Defended Larry Flynt, whose company was attempting to open a sex shop in Ohio. Defended extreme pornographer Max Hardcore, who was tried and convicted of transporting obscene materials in a Florida court.
