An illegitimate child of Jewish parents, Sarah was sent to a Catholic convent to be educated. Her mother Julie became the mistress of the Duc de Morny, Napoleon III's half brother. His support enabled her to enter the Conservatoire de Musique et Déclamation. Oscar Wilde wrote Salome for her. She was one of very few women to ever play the lead role in Hamlet. Her leg was amputated in 1915, but she continued to star in stage roles until her death in 1923.
