Cathy Guisewite AKA Cathy Lee Guisewite Born: 5-Sep-1950 Birthplace: Dayton, OH
Gender: Female Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Cartoonist Nationality: United States Executive summary: Cathy Cathy Guisewite was an ad writer who moved up the ladder fast. Five years after graduating from the University of Michigan, she was named vice president at W.B. Doner & Co., one of America's largest independent agencies. She sent funny drawings about her work and life to her mother, who suggested she submit the cartoons for publication. Her comics were syndicated in 1976 as Cathy, and Guisewite quit the advertising business in 1977.
Cathy was one of the first mainstream comics about and written by a woman. It plays off (and into) gender stereotypes, poking fun at the main character's obsession with her weight, mom, food, clothes, and boyfriends. Cathy is usually on a diet, and perpetually ten pounds overweight. The strip itself indulges in a tedium comparable only to Ziggy or Garfield. On occasion, it also nudges animal adoption and anti-fur messages. Guisewite announced her retirement and the end of the Cathy strip in 2010. Father: William L.
