Birthplace: Coatzacoalcos, Mexico

Gender: Female
Religion: Roman Catholic
Race or Ethnicity: Hispanic
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Actor

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Frida

Salma Hayek's parents sent her to a Catholic boarding school in Louisiana, where she was expelled for playing pranks on the nuns. She later studied political science at the College of Mexico City, but decided to pursue acting. Her first play, Aladino y la Lampara Maravillosa, put her character in peril, and performances were repeatedly interrupted by young boys from the audience bursting onto the stage to "save" her. That got producers' attention, and Hayek was soon making TV commercials, then winning fame and awards for Mexican TV dramas like Nuevo Amanecer and Teresa.

To the surprise of her fans, she left her Mexican fame and came to America, where she started over as yet unknown actress in Hollywood. Most of her American auditions ended in disappointment, until she was cast in Allison Anders's bilingual drama Mi Vida Loca in 1993. She was in Sinbad's short-lived sit-com The Sinbad Show, and achieved American fame in Robert Rodriguez's Desperado, opposite Antonio Banderas. In 2002 she starred in and produced Frida, a biopic of Frida Kahlo, and in 2006 she brought the telenovela to American TV with Ugly Betty.
