At some point in the early 1980s al-Masri fought in Afghanistan with the Mujaheddin, losing an eye and both hands. Upon return to London, he became the radical hook-armed Imam of Finsbury Park Mosque, which was closed when al-Masri was suspended in 2003 for his extremist Islamist views, support of Yemeni Islamist revolutionaries, and praise of Osama bin Laden. After the mosque's closure, al-Masri continued to preach in the street directly in front of the building. Home Minister David Blunkett revoked the Imam's citizenship in April 2003. Fighting deportation to Yemen, he was arrested on 26 May 2004 to be extradited to the United States.
