Peter Falk starred on TV as a bumbling but brilliant detective in the long-running Columbo, and in art-house cinema fare including Husbands and A Woman under the Influence. In a movie career spanning more than fifty years, his starmaking role was in the comedy classic It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, but he is best remembered for the grandfatherly narration in Rob Reiner's near-perfect adaptation of William Goldman's The Princess Bride, and for playing himself, an actor making a movie in Berlin, while the city was overrun with angels in Wim Wenders' remarkable Wings of Desire.
