Astronomer George Herbig discovered the first "newborn" stars in the region of the Orion nebula. His studies showed areas of increased nebulosity due to bipolar outflow as a star is born, a phenomenon also described independently by Guillermo Haro, and now called Herbig-Haro or HH objects.
