Created the first "semisynthetic" antibiotic tetracycline, by altering a naturally occurring molecule. In this case Conover swapped a chlorine atom with hydrogen, the result an effective treatment for salmonella, gonorrhea, syphilis, and streptococcus. Within three years of tetracycline's patent grant, it was the most-prescribed broad-spectrum antibiotic.
