After England enacted laws requiring that companies allow their financial records to be examined, Samuel Lowell Price quit his job at an accountanting firm and opened his own accountancy in 1849. William Hopkins Holyland and Edwin Waterhouse were added as Price's business partners in 1865, making the firm Price, Holyland, & Waterhouse, and after Holyland left in 1874 the firm was Price Waterhouse until its 1998 merger with Coopers & Lybrand to form Price Waterhouse Coopers.
