He studied star clusters, estimated the galactic mass of the Sun, and advanced the spectroscopic method for distinguishing between giant and main sequence stars. As the Director of the Stockholm Observatory, he oversaw the four-year construction of the new Stockholm Observatory in suburban Saltsjöbaden, completed in 1931. He was briefly Chairman of the Nobel Foundation, but was overtaken by illness and served only a few months.
