Upon the death of Governor-Elect Eugene Talmadge in 1947, it was unclear under the Georgia state constitution who should assume the governorship. The "Three Governors Controversy" had Thompson, newly elected Lieutenant Governor, the current Governor Ellis Arnall, who thought he could serve until a new Governor was elected, and Herman Talmadge, son of the Governor-Elect and appointed by the state legislature, all vying for position. Talmadge briefly assumed office, but the Georgia State Supreme Court ruled that Thompson was the proper successor.
