Durkin to fill the Senate seat of Norris Cotton in 1974. Wyman won the election by 355 votes, but his opponent demanded a recount, which he lost by just 10 votes. Cotton resigned on 31 December, and Wyman was appointed to serve the last four days of his term. He lobbied the case to the US Senate, and Durkin later agreed to settle the matter with a special election in September, which Wyman lost.
