Matthew Perkins and his brother Ivan opened their Perkins Pancake House in 1958, in Cincinnati, using a recipe purchased from Smitty's Pancake and Steak House in Seattle. In 1979 the brothers retired, selling all rights to their recipes and restaurants to Holiday Inn. The chain is now owned by an entity calling itself The Restaurant Company, which also owns Marie Callender's.
