Unsuccessful candidate for Pennsylvania State Treasurer in 1952. His 1954 win as governor was an upset -- it was thought to be a safe Republican seat. After his term he was an unsuccessful candidate for US Senate in 1958, losing to Hugh Scott. Retiring from politics, Leader became a mortgage banker and established a number of retirement homes, which continue to be run by his family.
